Coteach is Now IM Certified®

What it means for teachers planning and adapting IM® v.360 lessons

Implementing a high-quality curriculum is hard.

More than five million students across the country use Illustrative Mathematics' problem-based math curriculum. For the teachers bringing it to life every day, the work of planning, anticipating student thinking, and adapting instruction is constant — and it rarely stops when the school day does.

No curriculum, no matter how well-designed, can anticipate every classroom context, every student's prior knowledge, or every question a teacher has the night before a lesson. That gap between the curriculum as written and instruction as it actually happens is where teachers need most support.

Coteach was built to live in that gap.

What IM Certified means

Today, we're proud to share that Coteach is officially IM Certified®.

This means IM has reviewed Coteach and determined that it reflects the values and structure of the curriculum — that the planning support, scaffolds, and materials Coteach helps you create are aligned with how IM v.360 was designed to work.

As Dr. Kristin Umland, CEO and cofounder of Illustrative Mathematics, explained:

"Educators need thoughtful, well-aligned support as they plan, reflect, and adapt instruction for their students. Coteach reflects the kind of partnership we value at IM — one that respects the integrity of the curriculum while helping educators use it with confidence."

What this looks like in practice

Providing that kind of support, consistently and at scale, requires deep integration and extensive knowledge of how IM v.360 actually works. When a student is struggling, Coteach can help you find support that keeps them in grade-level math rather than quietly lowering the bar. When you adjust a lesson’s pacing, it understands how that decision might ripple forward through the unit. And when students need extra practice, it can align that practice with the representations and approaches they've already encountered in earlier grades — so new work builds on what they know rather than introducing something unfamiliar.

That kind of integration doesn't happen by accident. We've spent huge amounts of time working closely with expert IM coaches and implementers, talking to teachers at every stage of their IM journey, learning from system leaders, and observing classrooms. None of it has been a shortcut — and IM Certified is recognition that the work is paying off.

What's next

This certification is an important milestone but is also just the beginning. We're continuing to learn from teachers and improve — and we're excited to keep expanding what Coteach can do for educators using IM v.360.

If you've been curious about Coteach, now is a great time to try it. And if you're a school or district leader thinking about how to support your IM teachers, we'd love to talk.
